This defines how I see the world: music is our great unspoken language. Music is feeling without words. ” |
What I plan to bring to my peers and musical colleagues is my passion for the arts and how it transforms lives. It did for me. Music opened doors to not only the top music festivals of the world but to underserved communities filled with promising, undiscovered and deserving talent. For the past four years, I have volunteered at the Harmony Project in Los Angeles. I also volunteer my time playing music at senior center facilities. I was born in Los Angeles and my cultural heritage is Korean. Music surrounds us, it never leaves us and I always find myself tuned into music wherever I go. It is something I hope to share with my classmates, teachers and friends. I also identify with the sounds of traditional instruments from Asia. Blending it with Western classical music produces a powerful, original voice. |

More than ever, it is crucial to find a way to make music relevant by finding intersections with political science, history, technology and diplomatic relations.” Music remains our great common language. It transcends all boundaries and borders. Sliding my fingers over the metal strings of my double bass unlocks my imagination and a secret world. It’s an invisible mirror. A physical test of endurance to manipulate and convert this box of wood, metal strings and horsehair into ideas made of pure sound.
It’s also a severe mental test that comes purely from the heart--reflecting my life force and grit. Sometimes, this organic creature interacts and cooperates. Sometimes, it rebels. It can be excruciating, painful, joyous, humorous, sorrowful--all at once. Any way it comes, I love it. When I play the bass, I feel alive. --Ryan Spencer Kim
